THE FADER: Nina Sky – Day Dreaming

from: http://www.thefader.com/2012/02/02/nina-sky-day-dreaming-mp3/

Twin sisters Nicole and Natalie Albino bka Nina Sky, know how to wear a bevy of different hats, whether they’re teaming up with Kid Sister for a Spanglish rendition of Debbie Deb’s “Look Out Weekend” or, more recently, getting a little gothy and providing guest vocals for CREEP. Beau Vallis-produced “Day Dreaming,” the first single from their sophomore album, is a bedroom knocker with a crawling boom-bap undercurrent and a breathy hook. Nicole & Natalie, the follow-up to Nina Sky’s 2004 self-titled debut, is slated for release this July. The album comes two years after the sisters asked to be released from their deal with Polo Grounds Music. Last summer, they independently released a digital EP, The Other Side, and it has been reported that they’ll release Nicole & Natalie on their own as well.

Meet DJ Solarz – In Front Of The Lens

DJ Solarz has been perfecting his craft of DJing for twelve years and producing music for five years. Music has played an integral part of his life at a very young age and continues to play a prominent role throughout the years.

“I began playing the violin at age four and continued through middle school. I was lucky to learn how to read music as well as basic music theory while I was still young. Though I didn’t end up sticking with the violin, I’m thankful that everything I learned then, I’m able to apply to both my production work and DJing now,” exclaims Solarz. Being exposed to music at an early age enabled him to cultivate his skills and simultaneously apply it to all facets of his work today.

DJ Solarz was heavily influenced by artists around The Bay area. The music compelled and captivated his fascination and innately he pursued his passion.

“Growing up in the Bay Area I was surrounded by great DJs and remixers such as Jazzy Jim and Michael Ericsson. I was intrigued by their radio mixes and although I wasn’t really sure what they were doing, I knew I wanted to do it. At some point an older friend of mine mentioned that he had turntables at his house and offered to let me come by and check them out. I remember him giving me a stack of records then leaving the room for about an hour. I instantly was hooked although I barley was able to mix two songs together. I eventually saved up for my own DJ setup. I practiced my butt off for over a year before gaining the confidence to work any public events. I started doing local house and fraternity parties, slowly working my way into bars and nightclubs around town. I worked for free; in fact I took a loss for quite some time renting sound equipment for gigs, just to get my foot in the door.”

Solarz practiced religiously until he felt it was perfect. When he started out in the game, he compromised his compensation in order to hone his craft until he had enough confidence to spin in the limelight. His unwavering desire and drive certainly paid off in the long run.

In 2002, DJ Solarz eventually met his right-hand man, DJ Guzie. The chemistry was organic from the jump and the creation of the Rock-It!
Scientists came to fruition.

“In 2002 I met my partner in crime, DJ Guzie (the other half of the Rock-It! Scientists).” The Rock-it! Scientists had high hopes and dreams proved to be hungry and their voracious hunger was the driving force that pushed them to set their sights on DJing internationally. This hunger  desire leads them to gigs in Mexico and eventually would cause a buzz in the music business. DJ Solarz comments, that “Over the last five years we’ve done shows all over the world and continue to spend a significant amount of time on the road.”

The wild success and popularity of the Rock-it! Scientists gave them the honor to produce remixes for Kanye West, Far East Movement, Wynter Gordon, LMFAO and Rihanna. Their latest endeavor is a remix they just finished a with Dev and Enrique Iglesias entitled, “Naked”. You can listen and download it for free on their website: http://www.therockitscientists.com

Meet Etan Solarz –Behind The Lens

Etan Solarz was born and raised in Berkeley, CA. He raced mountain bikes until the age of 19. Ranked the number 1 rider in the US, Solarz spent two summers at the Olympic Training Center; in 2000 he moved to Colorado to continue his training. Unfortunately on his first day of training in Colorado, he had a tragic accident that would end his riding career. “I was struck by a car and was unable to train for nearly a year. Being forced to stay inside and off my bike, DJing quickly took over my life,” says Solarz.

image

When asked to give a brief description about himself, Solarz states, “I’m sure to some, I come across as a wildly confident person; however I’ll be the first to admit how insecure I am at times. My sense of humor is a direct result of my insecurities and my drive as an artist is no doubt fueled by my need to prove myself. Not sure if that’s a good thing all the time. If I could afford it, I’d see a shrink twice a week! That’s no joke.”

This is the truth about Etan Solarz as he goes through his self struggles as an artist. Solarz’ insecurities never prevented him from pursuing his dreams; it was the fuel for his fire. If DJ Solarz isn’t in the high demand octane action of the entertainment scene, you can catch him sipping on a cup of coffee and casually riding his bike around town. Solarz strives to be a balanced person; he measures his success not only through his professional career but also in his personal relationships. “I aspire to be an amazing father and husband (though I should probably get married and have children first), professionally I aim to be a world renowned music producer working with top artists, making hit after hit…changing lives through music,” declares Solarz. Ultimately, the simple things that make him happy is spending time with friends and family, riding his bike, eating and listening to R&B music.

MTV Buzzworthy: Clinton Sparks Remixes Lady Gaga’s ‘Bloody Mary’

Posted 1/20/12 3:02 pm ET by Byron Flitsch in Celebrity, Music

Lady Gaga’s Born This Way remix album brought new life to the singer’s already acclaimed hits. But much like Gaga’s progression of baffling persona, many of her songs also continue to evolve. Take, for example, the spicy revamp of “Bloody Mary” by producer Clinton Sparks.

While the official remix album included a more reserved version by British group The Horrors, Sparks created a dance club anthem full of raw, industrial thumping bass, groaning synths (which feel very Röyksopp, if you ask me), and a twirling tempo, right in line with the feeling of utter ecstasy that the majority of Gaga’s dance hits tend to provoke. The tone is haunting and eerie, which only helps elevate the song’s lovelorn, vaguely metaphysical lyrics: “Love is just a history that they may prove/ And when you’re gone I’ll tell them my religion’s you.”

Clinton Sparks also coproduced the original album version of “Bloody Mary” and with a recent Grammy nomination for the album, his energetic retool could be a celebratory nod toward the award. No matter the outcome of the nomination, Sparks’ remix wins.

USA TODAY: Meet Outasight, a (Pepsi) commercial success

By Carly Mallenbaum, USA TODAY

http://www.usatoday.com/life/music/ontheverge/story/2012-01-15/outasight-on-the-verge/52522052/1

Commercial success: Historically, PepsiCo has employed music icons such as Britney Spears and Michael Jackson to appear in commercials and sell its soda. For artist Outasight, however, the opposite tactic worked: Having his song in Pepsi ads helped him sell music. After the 28-year-old singer and rapper’s single Tonight Is the Night was featured in commercials that aired during The X Factor, the song became a hit.

Tonight Is the Night sits at No. 26 on USA TODAY’s top 40 airplay chart and has sold more than 240,000 downloads. The tune’s music video has attracted 1.4 million YouTube hits, and Outasight now has more than 10,000 Twitter followers.

Overnight sensation: “Before Tonight Is the Night, I was taking a grass-roots approach to music and gaining one fan at a time,” says Outasight, who released the single in September. But when the commercial aired, “my Facebook went over six figures in ‘Likes,’ ” he says. “It was a whole different medium of exposure.” Now Outasight, born Richard Andrew, plans to release two Tonight Is the Night remixes Tuesday and put out a full-length album sometime this year.

“I have a lot of music to share,” he says. “It’s eclectic, but it’s strong.”

What’s that sound? Outasight’s dad played the guitar and his mom was a record collector, so the self-proclaimed “music nerd” was exposed to everything from Kiss to The Beatles to Stevie Wonder growing up in Yonkers, N.Y. As a result, Outasight’s sound doesn’t stick to a single genre. His five mixtapes and two EPs released since 2007 fuse R&B, hip-hop, soul and rock. On Tonight Is the Night, Outasight incorporates head-bobbing synth, drums and vocals so smooth they almost sound Auto-Tuned (but aren’t, he says).

Though sometimes compared to B.o.B, he says the two aren’t really alike. “We both sing and rap, but the similarities stop there. I’m just me.”

On the grind: Outasight says he’s been “grindin’, grindin’, grindin’ ” for years. Starting out, he performed in New York City as an independent singer, frontman for a rock band and rapper at open mikes, using the moniker “Outsight” (later adding the “a” because it sounded as if he were mispronouncing “outside”). Once, he drove eight hours just to play a 15-minute gig in Pittsburgh.

“Anytime there was any sort of opportunity, I’d jump on it,” he says. “I did a lot of couch-surfing.”

Little victories: Before the Pepsi campaign, Outasight had a few turning points in his career. Two were in 2008, when the then-unsigned artist was featured on MySpace’s home page and won an mtvU Freshmen competition with his music video for Good Evening, a song off his Radio New York mixtape. Still, Outasight remained mostly out of sight.

“At that time, there weren’t a lot of singing rappers,” he says. A bigger break came in 2009, when Outasight signed a deal with Warner Bros., which was “the right fit,” he says.

Major collaboration: At Warner, Outasight tried to work with Talib Kweli, but it took a while to get the rapper’s attention. Outasight eventually sent him a song to rap on. “If you’re going to send Talib anything, you want to send something dope,” says Outasight. That song, Ain’t Waiting, wound up on Kweli’s 2010 album, Gutter Rainbows.

He’d love to work with Kweli again but has more collaborations in mind: Beck, James Murphy (of LCD Soundsystem), Jay-Z and Kanye West. “I like to set goals,” he says.

Hitting the road: After opening for Gym Class Heroes and the Dirty Heads last fall, Outasight is ready for his own tour. “It was a great learning experience,” he says, though he found touring without a mainstream hit a challenge. This month, armed with Tonight Is the Night, Outasight is performing club dates across the country.

“I’m touring extensively all year,” says Outasight, who rarely takes breaks. “I pride myself on being a performer.”

Plugged in: “My laptop is my best friend,” says Outasight, who’s constantly reading and connecting with fans and friends through social media. “I like being able to see kids really be affected by the music.”
